Password Protecting WIN2K Directories

If your site is hosted on an NT platform, a variety of options are available to you if you would like to password protect browser access to certain directories or files in your Website. The different methods described below will provide a solution that meets your specific needs.

There are two popular categories of password protection. Some Website businesses require that multiple usernames and passwords be generated because each registered user needs a unique one. Another alternative is to simply design a password protected area that accepts only one username and password. Please read below for the various methods of designing these options. They are listed according to the kind of platform and access you use when designing and uploading your Website.

I. FTP Access

You may use CGI scripting to design either of the password protection methods described above. Any number of simple Java applets or simple CGI scripts will password protect your Website. In this way, you can control exactly which files and directories are password protected, when they are protected, and what user names and passwords are valid. You can change these parameters any time you want - you do not have to ask Burlee to change them for you! You can find such free password protection scripts at the following archives:

When searching these archives, please remember that your Website is on an NT/windows 2000 platform. Thus the .htaccess file option will not work as this file type is supported only in the Unix/Linux based, Apache derived platforms and not in NT’s IIS.
